5 Ways to Have a Healthy, Happy Pet
As loving pet parents we all want to be sure that our pets are as healthy and as happy as possible. Here are five ways to make sure that your pets enjoy a longer, fuller life.1. Get regular check-ups.Pets need regular check-ups, just like humans do. In fact, sometimes pets need even more checking. They can't tell you when they're sick, and they are more exposed to dirt and bacteria than we are. Plus, we humans have a pretty good idea of what it is safe for us to eat, while some pets will eat anything that's in front of them, right down to tape and tube socks. Regular check-ups will help your vet catch small issues before they become big issues.2. Pay attention to parasites. There are a number of dangerous parasites out there targeting your pets, starting with fleas, the bane of pet owners everywhere. Fleas can lead to other more dangerous parasites, such as tapeworms. Make sure that you're doing everything you can do to prevent your pets from becoming exposed to these creatures. If you go to places where they're exposed to other pets on a regular basis (such as the dog park), plan on asking your vet for a regular, effective flea treatment like Revolution. Remember that most over-the-counter treatments are not terribly effective.3. Help your pets get their daily exercise. This may sound challenging since most of the time we humans don't get our daily exercise either. However, pets now struggle with weight problems just like humans do. Weight problems can cause a slew of issues for your dog or cat, up to and including diabetes, cancer, and arthritis. Make sure you're not overfeeding your companions. A small, inactive dog only needs 185-370 calories every day, and a 10 pound cat needs 240-350 calories every day. Take your dog out for regular walks, and play with your cats to keep them active. If proper feeding and exercise don't help then see your vet about your pet's weight problem.4. Get your pet's vaccines up to date.Prevention is better than cure, especially since some pet diseases (such as rabies) are invariably life-threatening. Make sure that all of your pets are up to date on their vaccinations.5. Know your pet first aid.Do you know what to do when your pet is choking? Do you know animal CPR? Most people have no idea these remedies even exist. If you can learn them, you will be that much closer to ensuring that your pet has a happy, healthy life.
